We met Willie this summer at one of our “Fresh Food Friday’s” outreach events. Willie had recently finished serving 16 years in prison and was new to Atlanta. He heard about us through a Christian discipleship group called “Hog Mob” who was serving with us in the neighborhood that day.  He told us his story and how he had given his life to Christ in 2019, after a life of crime, destruction, homelessness and drug addiction that started at the age of 7.  He shared that he had been praying for a community of Christian men who would help him grow in his faith and hold him accountable so that he would not fall back into his old ways.  City Takers was the answer to this prayer.  Since that day, Willie has been a part of our City Takers family and has gotten plugged into many of our ministries including our church plant, Crossover Church ATL and more.

“City Takers has provided me with a place that I can fellowship and worship with other believers. Being around guys like Ruben, Pastor Phil and some of the other men at the church has given me a sense of family and belonging. They have had me over their house, fed me and allowed me to be apart of their family. I thank God for my City Takers family.”

In August, we had a back to school event and collected and distributed backpacks and school supplies for kids in our community that were going back to school.  With the help of many donors, churches and organizations that partnered with us including Maverick City Music, Reach Records, CRU, Victory and more, we were able to collect and giveaway 1,000 backpacks filled with supplies.  This was a huge blessing to many families in our community who otherwise may not have been able to afford to buy school supplies for their kids.  We also held a Back 2 School community block party where we had food, games, free haircuts, music and more as we distributed the backpacks.  Check out the recap video above!

In September, City Takers teamed up with One Race for Jesus and Justice. Over 3,000 people came together at Piedmont Park to support racial reconciliation and justice by walking and running a 5k, worshipping together and being mobilized toward Jesus and Justice! This was an amazing demonstration of love and unity in our city as people of all different ages, backgrounds and nationalities came together to fellowship, worship and stand for unity and justice.
